Kalahari Tent Tortoise
(Psammobates oculiferus)
Internationally it is known as the Serrated Tortoise because of the sharp, pointed serrations that fringe the edge of the shell. You can see them sticking out of the back in this photo. Locals call it the Kalahari Tent Tortoise, named for the Kalahari Desert in which it is found.
It is one of the smallest tortoise species in the world. Full grown adults seldom reach 6 inches in length (less than the length of your hand!)
The beautiful geometric patterns on the shell have threatened its existence. It is commonly sold by Kalahari San people to tourists as decorated snuff or perfume boxes. Please, never buy products made from wild animals!
Photographed in Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana.
